1.1 Background of the Study
Films are a powerful medium for raising awareness about critical societal issues, including healthcare. In developing countries like Nigeria, maternal healthcare remains a significant concern, with high maternal mortality rates exacerbated by inadequate access to medical facilities, cultural barriers, and a lack of education (Abubakar & Sani, 2023). In Wurno Local Government Area, Sokoto State, films have the potential to address these challenges by educating audiences about the importance of maternal healthcare and advocating for improved services. This study explores the role of film as an advocacy tool, examining how it raises awareness and influences public and policymaker perceptions of maternal health.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous efforts to improve maternal healthcare in Nigeria, rural areas like Wurno continue to face significant challenges, including poor healthcare infrastructure and low awareness of maternal health services. While films have been used to advocate for various health issues, their specific role in promoting maternal healthcare in Wurno has not been adequately studied (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). This research seeks to fill this gap by examining how films can be used to advocate for improved maternal healthcare.
