Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Films are a powerful medium for raising awareness about critical societal issues, including healthcare. In developing countries like Nigeria, maternal healthcare remains a significant concern, with high maternal mortality rates exacerbated by inadequate access to medical facilities, cultural barriers, and a lack of education (Abubakar & Sani, 2023). In Wurno Local Government Area, Sokoto State, films have the potential to address these challenges by educating audiences about the importance of maternal healthcare and advocating for improved services. This study explores the role of film as an advocacy tool, examining how it raises awareness and influences public and policymaker perceptions of maternal health.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite numerous efforts to improve maternal healthcare in Nigeria, rural areas like Wurno continue to face significant challenges, including poor healthcare infrastructure and low awareness of maternal health services. While films have been used to advocate for various health issues, their specific role in promoting maternal healthcare in Wurno has not been adequately studied (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). This research seeks to fill this gap by examining how films can be used to advocate for improved maternal healthcare.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze how maternal healthcare issues are portrayed in films consumed in Wurno.
  2. To evaluate the impact of films on community awareness about maternal healthcare.
  3. To explore the potential of films as advocacy tools for improving maternal healthcare services.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How are maternal healthcare issues depicted in films in Wurno?
  2. What impact do films have on community awareness of maternal healthcare?
  3. How can films be leveraged as advocacy tools to improve maternal healthcare services?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films addressing maternal healthcare resonate with audiences in Wurno.
  2. Films contribute significantly to increasing awareness about maternal healthcare.
  3. Films have the potential to influence policymakers to improve maternal healthcare services.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the importance of using films to advocate for maternal healthcare improvements. Its findings are relevant for filmmakers, health organizations, and policymakers aiming to reduce maternal mortality and improve health outcomes in rural communities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of films in advocating for maternal healthcare improvements in Wurno Local Government Area, Sokoto State. It examines audience perceptions and the thematic content of relevant films.
